NAGOMI Business Card Case — Dragonfly (Tonbo)

In medieval Japan, the dragonfly was known as kachimushi — the victory insect. Because it can only fly forward, never backward, samurai carried this motif on their armor and battle dress as a symbol of unwavering courage and the will to advance. It connected, too, to Akitsushima, one of Japan's most ancient names for the land itself.
INDEN's Nagomi series was born in 1992 from a single idea: to distill that spirit into the simplest, most enduring form. Two shades of urushi lacquer — black and red — depict the dragonfly in stillness and in flight, brought to life against a deep navy deerskin ground.
More than thirty years later, it remains one of INDEN's best-loved designs. Quietly elegant, instantly meaningful.
